This event will be held via Zoom March 27th, 3 -5 p.m., EST. This event will include a performance from Soror Hermine Pinson. Dr. Pinson will perform works from her recent lecture along with a Jazz Band. The event will also feature a panel of three Black-owned business Tea Companies.
Dr. Hermine Pinson has published three poetry collections: ‘Ashe, Mama Yetta and Other Poems, and Dolores is Blue/Dolorez is Blues. She also released a cd Changine the Changes, in special collaboration with Yusef Komunyakaa and Estella Conwill Majozo. Her poetry, fiction, and critical essays have appeared in anthologies such as African American Review Callaloo, Cave Canem Poetry Anthology, The Ringing Ear: Black Poets Lean South, Common Bonds: Modern Stories by and about Texas Women, Konch, Melus, and Forum for European Contributions in African American Studies. She recently co-edited a special issue of the literary journal Valley Voices on the life and work of poet Sterling Plumpp. She has had fellowships at Cave Canem, Soul Mountain, Yaddo, Macdowell, Byrdcliffe Colony, Vermont Studio Center, and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. She is a professor of Creative Writing and Africana Studies at the College of William and Mary.
Pianist Harris Simon has performed with many well-known jazz musicians including Sonny Fortune, Clifford Jordan, Michael Brecker, and Claudio Roditi. He has played at jazz festivals in New York, Montreal, Montreux, Edinburgh, Tokyo, Helsinki, and Stockholm among others. In 1983, Mr. Simon won First Prize Winner at the Kalisz International Jazz Piano Competition in Poland.
Mr. Simon has presented lectures and given performances at the Kimball Theater, the DeWitt Wallace Gallery, and the Williamsburg Regional Library. Mr. Simon has been a regular at An Occasion for the Arts and Williamsburg’s Winter Blues Jazz Fest. He has performed several times as a jazz pianist/accompanist with the Williamsburg Symphony. In 2013, he performed at Carnegie Recital Hall in a program of Poetry and Music sponsored by the Muscarelle Museum. He has released five albums with his own group.
Mr. Simon is a founding member of Top Brass Reedsters, the professional harmonica club of New York City. He has appeared with the Richmond Symphony playing the solo harmonica part in the silent film “The General”. He has been a member of the performing artist faculty of the College of William and Mary since 1994. He enjoys teaching and takes great pleasure in coaching the William and Mary Jazz Combo. The Combo performed for Queen Elizabeth II during her visit to Williamsburg in 2007. Mr. Simon is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Nu Sigma Chapter
